Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Before you quickly say "of course not", what imspired the question was seeing some of the shows recently on Oxygen and "women's channels". Recently, there are a lot of shows like the Bad Girls Club and a lot of shows that focus on the cases and crimes of females.

So, if the women's channels want to show such programs, then *supposedly* women want to see it. Do you think that it's empowering to see women pulling off crimes that stump police?

Crime is crime, nobody needs to debate that!!!!!

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I don't think it's empowering at all unless you can relate to the fugitives. I think it has to do with the success of shows such as CSI, Law and Order, etc that have a wide base including a huge portion of female viewers. It's a simple question of supply and demand.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I think it's more of a novelty, as women aren't commonly thought of as criminals (despite evidence to the contary).

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Yes, it is empowering to other criminals who are women. I don't think it makes me feel particularly inspired.

C. :)!!

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I suppose it does, in an odd way. Crime is filled with sexual inequality, e.g. you don't see any female dons in the mafia. I really think that's the wrong kind of empowerment though.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

They are not empowering - just the opposite.

Women are already unreasonable and unaccountable. These shows only serve to further anger men, who will in time revolt and make women accountable.

Wait! This is good. The day of reckoning is coming.

Americans have a long love/hate relationship with criminals. There's shows like COPS, which glorify our emerging police state and depict endless hapless criminals running from police and getting cuffed and abused.

Then there's movies like Bonnie and Clyde, and others, that glorify the glamorous bank robber who outwits the evil police.

In the case of the latter, in the interest of equality, I'm all for female as well as male criminals.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Of course not; quite the reverse. Women's channels do not always have their finger on the pulse of what women actually want to view, so there is no "supposedly" at work here, but rather badly chosen topics from execs who hazard guesses at what they THINK/ASSUME women want rather than doing actual research.

What's this "empowering" crap???

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Not empowering so much, but I sure think it's interesting. I'd be willing to bet that those channels are only able to show those programs because they feature exclusively female crimes. I say that because advertisers would balk at running spots on a women's channel during a show called "Criminals' Club." But the truth is, many, many women LOVE crime shows of all kinds, especially ones that feature real crimes.

Bad Girls Club isn't about crimes! It's about a house full of women who like to go at each other for no reason.

Do your research!

And no - women committing crimes is never empowering.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I don't know if empowering is the right word, but I do think these programs are a good thing.

Why? Because they dispell the "feminine" stereotype that women are innocent incapable of evil, etc.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I see some dichotomous answers here that would put the thin distribution of female criminals in a " tail wagging the dog " position. If these shows focus on the crimes of women, as they focus on the combat skills of women. ( women beating down men weighing 100 lbs more than they ) then it will be just another exercise in fiction.

" Devil's Advocate. " Get a brain!

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Sort of, yeah. It's doing away with the image of women as weak, helpless lambs, and showing strong, independent women who outsmart the cops. Even if these women aren't exactly good rolemodles, it's still a basically empowering message. Mostly, it's just fun to watch.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Yes, on an individual level these shows empower women by showing them how bitchy, desperate, self centered, ego feeding, drunk, and self destructing they are not.

We have all wanted to knockout the person next to us or get piss drunk after a breakup or losing a job...but most of us don't because we have self control and dignity.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

I hate that show----'Bad Girls Club'---I don't know why they waste time on it. I also don't believe it empowers women but it maybe help lower societal inhibitions against bad behavior in same way that the 'Girls Gone Wild' videos do. Lowered inhibitions is NOT the same thing as empowerment.

Are Shows About Female Criminals Empowering to Women?

Whether it comes across as empowering or not I think depends very much on why the women became criminals in the first place.

In the early 1990s women felt that they were oppressed by male domination. Then along came a film called Thelma and Louise which was about two ordinary women who over night became criminals. This was a very popular movie because even though they were criminals they were seen as rebelling against male authority and that was considered empowering.

But I think in movies where women become criminals just because they are bad and aren閳ユ獩 perceived as rebelling or standing up to some evil or oppressive power then there is very little if anything that could be perceived as been empowering
