I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

It was at a club in Coventry, queued up and the bouncer said that I was in the wrong club and smiled, firstly i thought he was joking until he asked me to stand aside. I asked why he said that, he said i looked gay and he could refuse me entry.

I stopped a policeman that was passing and told him and he said that, if thats the door policy then I cant do anything. I am furious and I feel singled out for being gay. What do you guys/girls think...

Even worse the people in the queue laughed at me and where giving me hassle..!!! I was with 4 girls at the time and they stood by me and did not enter the club because of what happened.

The policeman was wrong!

You have a case to take the bouncer and this club to court, because as of the 30 April 2007 UK law changed and it is an offence to refuse anyone goods or services because of their sexuality. This means if you are refused entry to a club that because they say you are gay then they have broken the law. The same law works the other way round if you are refused entry to a gay club because you are straight.

This law applies to any business like a shop, club, bar or hotel that provide goods or services to the public, there are some exceptions but your case is not be one of them.

The Citizens Advice Bureau has more information on this see the link below.

didnt think they could disccriminate like that now

Go to a different club.

You wouldn't want to hang out at that one anyway.

This is absolutely shocking! I am so sorry for you. You must be hurt and outraged. Not only were the bouncers breaking the law by discriminating against you, but the police officer has also failed you by not enforcing the law. You CANNOT be turned away from any venue, club, or public service because you are or look gay. No way. You need to contact your local police station and file an official complaint. If you hear nothing back keep moving that complaint up. You must must must also contact your local citizens advice bureau re. the club. I don't know who you take your complaint to, but they will.

What happened to you is wrong. Don't let it go. It's not fair and it is unlawful.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

thats really messed up . I would first look into the laws in your city and see if you can sue. a club has the right to refuse anyone they want usually. i'm not a lawyer but i beleive they cant turn you away because you look gay. I wonder what would have happened if you were straight and they did that. Im sure the guy would have raised holy hell. speak to someone within the gay rights and civil right lawyers and see if you can do anything and go back and get proof via camera or recorder.I would also try and contact gay friendly media like tv or newspaper. Then I would laugh all the way to the bank.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Poor you.Did you have a goofy grin on your face or what?Seriously, though their policy sucks, clubs are allowed to do that.Best thing to do?Create a stink and gat others to boycott them if you can.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

It's no different than being refused entry because you're wearing the wrong clothes or the wrong sneakers or whatever.

Bouncers are usually *****. Nothing you can do about it.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

thats harsh, real shite in fact, sorry dude.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

no baby he can not do that thats discrimination .even if u r gay or maybe even look it thats no reason for him to turn u away like that is real f@#k@d up have grounds for a law suite u need to go get a lawyer asap hunny. alot of this is going on in the world it needs to stop.GO AND GET THAT LAWYER. your case will stick trust me GOOD LUCK

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Go back to the club and speak to the manager and

ask if what had happen to you is policy.

If not, either he owes you an apology and some free stuff

(admission, drinks, etc.), or get a lawyer and sue.

If that is their policy, then call a lawyer and see if you can

sue, because you feel as though your rights have been violated.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Complain to Trading Standards.

This is indeed illegal.

Otherwise call the manager and ask for compensation for a ruined evening, stating a realistic amount, and if he does not pay up sue on www.moneyclaim.gov.uk - its free.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

HAHAHAHAH wow, that's pretty horrible.

i guess you'll have to look more straight then?

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

OMG i didn't think they were allowed to stop people going in regardless of sexuality aren't there discrimination laws for a reason i wouldn't want to try to get in there again anyway on principle hopefully u can find a better club than that :)

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

just wondering, are you actually gay or not?

even if it's a "straight club" they've got no right to turn you away, just as if heteros go to gay clubs, they can't be turned away either.

if it was dress code or something, they can turn you away, it's the way they do things, but not for sexuality.

see the manager, check to see if that was policy ( singled out based on "look", refused entry, if you're not gay tell him that you aren't and that this made you feel ridiculed etc). then sue / accept any remuneration he offers, then dont go there again.

seriously, if the doormen act like that, do you really want to be inside with what they've let through?

and regarding kiddie's answer, the club in itself is a business, especially if it sells drinks ( and what club doesn't sell drinks? thats how they make money).

as it's a registered business, it has to conform to anti discriminatory laws.

if it isn't a registered business, then it's illegal according to the sale of aclhohol act.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

All i can say is that the bouncer is a pathetic idiot.Don't even bother go to this club again find a better one

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

I don't think they can turn you away just because you "look gay", even if you are gay! I wouldn't want to go to such a homophobic club. If you want to take action against the club then you may have to take them to court. Then it might just be your word against theirs!

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

that may be their policy, to turn away "gays"....but...is it their policy to publicly humiliate people? The bouncer is an employee of the club, and therefore the club publicly humiliated you. you have witnesses (the 4 women with you). check with a lawyer, then have him/her see the club owner.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

In the UK I believe you have protection under sexual orientation. So you can probably just sue them for violating your rights, and then they'll have to let you in.

But keep in mind that the bouncer may have been trying to do you a favour if he knows that it would cause problems.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

at this point, this club is not worth the time. Try to persuade all that you know not to go there anymore. if that is their policy, they need to be shut down

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

you know that really don't surprise me not even just in the U.K its because door bouncers have laws unto themselves simply if they don't like the look of you then ur not comlng in, but to refuse you because you looked gay takes the biscuit to be polite, i can understand some people in the club might want to cause trouble because of they're prejudices but that's your choice to make, a s s e holes are what they are, personally i wouldn't even bother going to places like that cause its just not worth it if you can't be yourself. x

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

this is not on-of course he can refuse you entry but to tell u its because you look gay is disgusting-can u imagine if he said its because you are black or white. write to the manager of the club giving them details-dates etc and demand an apology

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Did this club have a name?

Just so I can avoid it if I go to Coventry.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

go for it!! good luck with that! ^_^.

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Use your energy and time wisely dude; whilst I abhor discrimination of any sort, this seems like the potential return you may get from this may not be worth it - though I don't know what you might get as a result.

It was probably just a looser, the bouncer, trying to put someone down, who he assumed was straight - maybe it's his stock answer to guys, when he gets his satisfaction from barring entry, with added perceived 'humiliation' on the part of the straight guy. In this instance you're gay, so he insulted you in other ways, perhaps ruining your night.

I suggest we get a bunch of gay guys to turn up, like Peter Tatchell (gay activist) etc, if the club agree with his decision. Overall, I think your energy is best to be somewhat limited on working against them - how much would you now really like to go there anyway?

Good luck! Rob

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Its a good policy

I hope all clubs do that.

No gays allowed. The bouncer is doing a good job. They should give him a raise

I got turned away from a straight club because i looked gay?

Is it your club or theirs? If its their club, then they can let in who they want. Who are you to say you should be able to enter someone else property if they don't want you there?

If the laws are different in England, then they could come up with many, many other excuse not to let you in.
